Non-ionic - containing no charge (polyoxyethylenes or alkyl glucosides). Non-ionic detergents are suited for solubilizing embrane proteins without altering biological activity. These non-denaturing, gentler detergents are ideal for studying the conformation and function of proteins because they keep secondary and tertiary structure intact. Non-ionic detergents efficiently separate hydrophilic proteins from membrane spanning, hydrophobic proteins.
